Balsam Fir

Balsam fir is a native evergreen well adapted to the cold climates of the northern United States, known for its shiny green color and especially its spicy fragrance. The needles have a broad circular base, a blunt tip, and are usually dark green on top with a silvery underside.

The species thrives in cooler climates and demands abundant soil moisture, growing best in well-drained, sandy loam soils that are somewhat acidic. Seeds attract wildlife such as grouse and squirrels, and white-tailed deer eat the foliage and use stands for cover, a good choice for a specimen tree or property screen.
