The Norway “red” pine takes its name from its reddish-brown, scaly bark, which develops wide, flat-topped ridges with shallow splits as the tree ages. Needles run 3 to 8 inches long, growing two per bundle, with cones 1.2-2.5 inches long.

It works well as a landscape or specimen tree, and its broad shape makes it a good choice for a natural screen or windbreak. It grows in sandy soils but also adapts to well-drained loams and tolerates dry, rocky soils; just avoid planting where it will be exposed to de-icing salts or excessively moist soil.
