Sugar maple is a large, long-lived shade tree hardy to zone 3, reaching 55-75 feet tall and 30-50 feet wide at maturity. It grows slowly to moderately, about 1-2 feet a year, and tolerates shade better than most maples, with only moderate drought tolerance. Its signature draw is fall color: a turn to yellow, orange, and red each autumn.
